Employee-Led Philanthropy Campaigns Among Reasons for Selection

BRAMPTON, ON, Dec. 7, 2018 /CNW/ - Medtronic of Canada Ltd., an indirect subsidiary of Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT) announced today that it has been recognized as one of the Greater Toronto's Top Employers for 2019. Medtronic's philanthropic and employee-led activities, along with a top tier benefits package, are among some of the many reasons Medtronic is considered a top employer.

The Medtronic Mission is another reason why people join and stay at Medtronic. Written almost 60 years ago, the Medtronic Mission — to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life — hasn't changed. "Our Mission is what makes working here so rewarding and employees are drawn to us because of it," says Neil Fraser, president of Medtronic of Canada Ltd.

Employees play an active role in putting that mission into motion through various philanthropic and volunteer activities, in line with the sixth tenet of the Medtronic Mission: being a good corporate citizen. That includes an array of charitable activities, and a dollar-for-dollar employee donation match from the Medtronic Foundation.

Last June, over 500 Canadian employees gathered to assemble 50 new bikes for local children, a meaningful connection to Medtronic's 50th anniversary in Canada. Marilise Kassouf, associate business process analyst, led the project coordination with members of the philanthropy team, and made the connection. "The build-a-bike campaign was the perfect way for employees to come together, celebrate our anniversary, and give back to our community," said Kassouf.

Medtronic is the largest medical device employer in Canada, with over 1,100 employees across Canada and over 350 employees in Ontario, where Medtronic Canada is headquartered. Medtronic technologies are used to address nearly 40 medical conditions and last year alone, Medtronic innovations benefited 70 million people globally — that's two people every second.

One such technology is the world's first self-adjusting insulin pump system for people with Type 1 diabetes aged seven and older, which was recently licensed by Health Canada. "This technology has the potential to give people with Type 1 diabetes and their caregivers more freedom from constant worry, daily insulin injections, and an improved quality of life that has been out of reach until now," said Laura Cameron, senior director, Diabetes Group and Consumer Care. "Bringing the new pump to Canadians, along with a series of other technologies for chronic pain, neurosurgery, and ear, nose, and throat procedures, is a fitting way for Medtronic to put an exclamation mark on 50 years of innovation and commitment to patient care in Canada."
